Country Life

Just the fact that I am writing stories about country life makes me smile.  And at times, it even makes me shake my head a bit as I reflect back on my journey that led me full circle back to the country.  The first 21 years of my life were in rural America, west Texas to be exact, in an area known as “the last frontier” and the gateway to The Big Bend.  It was a wonderful place to grow up and is still a magical valley in the high desert of Texas called Alpine.

The truth is that the whole time I lived there I was dreaming and planning my life as a big city girl.  It wasn’t that I ever felt out of place.  I loved my hometown and “my people.”  But, I always had that wanderlust for the unknown.  I suppose I still do.  Point being, during those first 21 years of my life I was dreaming of the stories I would one day tell about the fantastic life I was living in the “big ole city.”

Well, I did get to finally live in the big ole city, several of them in fact, for the following 20 years.   But, now I’m back in rural America living in the Hill Country of Texas and these are my stories about life in the country .  And yes it is true; life really does come full circle.

    And so the legend goes…

I have always been enthralled with hummingbirds.  My mother would always hang up feeders when I was a child, so I guess it was only natural when I flew the nest and set up my own housekeeping that I, too, would do the same.   (But as a [...]

You know you're from a small town when…

It is days like today when I realize how nice it is to be living in a small town.  It is two days before Thanksgiving and I had to "go to town" for errands.  So before I go any further let me say how much I love saying "going to town." [...]

    Like a Porch….

I want to lay up like that, to float unstructured, without ambition or anxiety.  I want to inhabit my life like a porch.   - Rebecca Wells, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

Think I'll just sit here and drink

It's exhausting being a grass-fed-free-roaming cow at Hummingbird Farms.  I wish someone would bring me one of those cute little drinks with an umbrella in it....

The pink ribbon and the silver lining

This month is quite monumental for me.  Perhaps if Facebook had existed in 2003 it would have been listed as a life event on my timeline.  Well actually – now that I think about it, probably [...]

Sunday morning view from my window

We awoke this morning to Clementine the longhorn bull calf staring in our bedroom window waiting for Abe the boxer to come out and play.  Is it normal to have longhorns peeking through your bedroom windows? Hmmm.....  Don't know if it is [...]

    Our New Year's Eve Baby

This is our newest baby at Hummingbird Farms.  We are so happy! Can't believe little Punkin' is a mother...  So Lisa said we should name the baby Lang, as in Auld Lang Syne.  And so it shall [...]

A blessing to start your day

Both of these pictures were taken weeks apart, and both in the morning as I was bolting out the door for work. I love both of them because it is as if our dog Poncho, and our longhorn Gayle, were both getting their morning blessings from St. Francis. [...]
